Cornea & Eye Donation

Keratoplasty

Keratoplasty is the procedure where the cornea which has become opaque & cloudy is replaced with a clear cornea from the donor's eye. This is done for optical purpose i.e. to increase the visual function in corneal opacity and for treating corneal imperfections like keratoconus.

For this purpose the donor tissue must be fresh i.e. eyes are removed from the dead body within 6 hours of death of the donor and stored in a refrigerator at 4oC & should be transplanted to the recipients eye with in 24 hours.

For receiving a cornea one has to apply to an eye bank.

Eye Donation

Give the gift of sight. Cornea is the clear window covering the front of the eye. Vision gets drastically reduced if the cornea become cloudy or opaque due injuries, infection, chemical, burns  or nutritional deficiency.

If you donate your eyes you are giving vision to blind people making them self independent. The cornea is removed from the donor's eye and transplanted to the patient's eye. Eyes are never taken from a living person. It can only be taken after death. Although the entire eye is removed from the body, it is only the cornea that can be used for transplantation. The eyes are removed within six hours of death and taken to the nearest eye bank. On reaching the eye bank, eyes are evaluated, processed & used for corneal transplant surgery.

Who can donate eye ?

Almost any one can pledge to donate his/her eyes after death even if anyone is wearing glasses or suffering from hypertension or Diabetes.
